01 - The two shipping companies cooperate to order 4 hydrogen-powered general cargo ships

On November 29, CMB.Tech, a clean technology company owned by Belgian shipowner Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), announced that it would cooperate with Belgian shipping company Boeckmans to order four 5,000-dwt hydrogen-powered general cargo ships from Vietnam’s Dung Quat Shipyard.

This series of ships will be jointly designed by Handelskade. The first ship is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2025 and will be deployed on major routes such as Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and West Africa. The specific price of the new ship has not yet been disclosed.

The new ship will be equipped with a diesel-electric engine. The diesel-electric engine will be installed under the bow cabin. This configuration will allow the use of hydrogen-powered propulsion systems at the stern, as well as the installation of other alternative low-carbon engines. In addition, such a layout would provide sufficient space for storage of alternative fuels.

According to Clarkson data, this is the first time that Dung Quat shipyard has received an order for general cargo ships, and it is also the first order that the shipyard has received since 2016.

Pierre Durot, director of Boeckmans, said: "The main design concept of the ship is to reduce emissions through hull shape, innovative design and the application of the latest technology. Compared with traditional general cargo ships using diesel fuel, we have successfully reduced emissions by 40% emissions. Emissions can be reduced further by adopting new sustainable propulsion systems and creating storage space for fuels such as hydrogen."

This collaboration demonstrates CMB.TECH and Boeckmans’ commitment to promoting the sustainable development of the maritime industry while providing efficient and reliable transportation solutions for global trade routes.

In addition, CMB.Tech recently collaborated with DBR, a full-service provider of Dutch power solutions, to develop the first batch of dual-fuel hydrogen generator sets for marine applications, aiming to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime industry.

It is understood that Compagnie Maritime Belge is a diversified shipping and clean technology company headquartered in Antwerp, Belgium. It owns and operates 150 ships, including dry bulk carriers, container ships, chemical tankers and crew transfer ships.

Boeckmans is a shipping company founded in Antwerp 85 years ago. It owns and operates 6 ships, including 4 multi-purpose ships and 2 general cargo ships.
